House of the Rising Sun
Fingerstyle Workshop
the Michigan fingerstyle guitar Society will host their once-a-month workshop at Pursell Lutherie on Saturday, September 12th, at 6:30pm
Join us for the next fingerstyle workshop for aspiring guitarists and those looking to expand their repertoire with iconic melodies that have shaped musical history. Regardless of its origins in England, New Orleans, or Appalachia, House of the Rising Sun is a haunting traditional song that has captivated musicians, from Clarence "Tom" Ashley's 1933 recording to Josh White's influential blues interpretation to The Animals' electrifying version that topped charts worldwide.
We will explore the mesmerizing fingerstyle arrangement built on its signature descending bass line, unlocking the arpeggiated patterns and expressive dynamics that transform this song into a powerful narrative. The session will be divided into three segments catering to different experience levels:
Beginners: We'll start with the basic chord progression and rhythm pattern
Intermediate: We'll add in the basic fingerstyle melody
Advanced: We'll explore variations and ornamentations to spice up your performance
The workshop will conclude with a group play-along where participants from each level can comfortably join in. For those seeking additional support, a follow-up Zoom session will be held one week later, offering a review and an opportunity to address any questions.
Don't miss this chance to enhance your fingerstyle guitar skills and learn a classic song!
